Do You Have Bunions?

Described as a bony bump formed on the joint at the base of the big toe, bunions are the result of the bones in the front of the foot getting dislodged. The big toe is pulled towards the smaller toes forcing the joints at the base of the big toe to stick out. When this occurs, the surrounding skin will turn reddish and feel very tender.

If you’re struggling with bunions, see one of our podiatrists here at the Foot & Ankle Clinic to get them checked. You can visit our Menomonie, Rice Lake, Chippewa Falls, or Eau Claire, WI, locations.

What Causes Bunions?

How are the bones dislodged? Our body weight shifts to the joint at the base of the big toe with every step. The pressure is responsible for forcibly dislodging the joint resulting in bunions in 25% of adults. There are other causes for the formation of bunions like ill-fitting, pointed, or narrow toe-box shoes. In some instances, it can be hereditary, as well. What is sure is that bunions can both limit your mobility as well as complicate your life due to extreme pain.

When Should You See Your Podiatrist?

Most of the time, medical treatment for bunions is really not necessary. However, you should consult a podiatrist in our Menomonie, Rice Lake, Chippewa Falls, or Eau Claire, WI, office if:

  • Your pain is continuous;
  • The bump on the big toe joint is very pronounced;
  • You have limited big toe or foot movement; and
  • Your condition is making it difficult for you to wear shoes.

The treatment options will take into account the severity of the condition. The immediate priority is to relieve the pressure on the bunion and stop further deformity of the joint. Recommended treatments can include padding and taping, anti-inflammatory medications/injections, ultrasound therapy, or shoe inserts/orthotics.

Finally, if all else fails, there is always a surgical solution. Podiatric surgery is often recommended as a last resort when the bunion has passed the threshold of other treatment options. Surgery allows for the removal of the bony enlargement to restore toe joint alignment to its normal state.
