What Does Total Ankle Replacement Mean?

Total ankle replacement or total ankle arthroplasty involves removing parts of the tibia and talus bones. Those parts are then replaced with either metal or plastic pieces in order to reduce pain and restore ankle function.

Who Needs Total Ankle Replacement?

In most cases, total ankle replacement surgery is recommended for those with chronic pain, stiffness, and inflammation. More often than not, candidates suffer from arthritis, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. However, it’s not the first recommended treatment. Instead, those who receive total ankle replacement usually only do so after other treatment types have failed.

How Long Does It Take to Resume Normal Activities After Surgery?

During the first month, you’ll need to stay off of your foot. After the first month, you’ll slowly resume walking with a boot. In two months, you should be able to resume some activity, though it’s a play it by ear type of recovery. Most patients are able to fully resume activities in about one year.
